YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SHOOT

GreenAcres woodland weddings

Over the last few years, engagement or pre-wedding photo shoots have become increasingly popular. There are so many reasons why these shoots are a great idea but what do you really need to know? We’ve put together this guide for you so that your engagement photo shoot is absolutely brilliant.

Firstly, perhaps we should explain why we love engagement shoots so much. Well, getting engaged is a BIG moment. It’s all too easy to forget that and just rush on with the wedding planning but stop for a moment. Take some time to celebrate your engagement and mark the occasion. A fabulous photo shoot gives you the chance to do exactly that.

Obviously, you’ll receive wonderful photos from your shoot and whilst it’s always easy to grab a quick selfie with your partner whenever you want, beautiful professional photography is something else entirely. Use the images from your shoot for your save the dates or just display them at home. The choice is yours!

Your engagement shoot also has a practical purpose. As comfortable as we all might be with taking photos of ourselves for social media, it feels entirely different when a professional photographer is pointing their camera at you. Add in wedding day nerves and you can understand why some couples feel distinctly uneasy about the prospect of having photos taken on their wedding day.

However, if you can have a ‘practice run’ at your engagement shoot, everything becomes much easier on your wedding day. Spend some more time with your photographer, practice a few poses, discuss what you like and don’t like and learn to relax in front of the camera. Your engagement shoot will show you that there’s nothing to worry about and, when you see the photos, you’ll realise how great you look.

You can also have a lot of fun with your shoot. Involve your pets, be silly, wear whatever makes you happy and don’t be afraid to mix things up a little bit. Trust your photographer and go with their suggestions – you’ve chosen them for their expertise and they want you to look and feel amazing. Now’s the time to experiment!

When it comes to the shoot itself, there are no ‘rules’ about what to wear. Some couples like to choose outfits that work with their surroundings, others use the opportunity to get dressed up or to wear clothes that really reflect their personalities. It is important to be comfortable with your look however – this will allow you to relax in front of the camera as much as possible and really enjoy the experience.

Some couples like to include props in their engagement shoots and this can be a great idea. For example, if you know you want to use one of your images on your save the date cards, a little banner giving the date of your wedding can be a great idea. Big coloured balloons and even smoke bombs can also look brilliant. If you like the idea of props for your photos but aren’t sure what to use, speak to your photographer and see what they suggest.

Lastly, your location. Obviously, we think woodlands make the best backdrop for romantic, organic and natural engagement photo shoots but really, anything goes. From gritty city locations to your favourite spot at home, engagement shoots can take place anywhere!

Whatever you decide to do for your shoot, the most important thing is to HAVE FUN! Enjoy your shoot and make the most of every moment. You’re in love – let your photos tell that story.
